It's been one day I was running SpamItBack.
What I don't like about SpamItBack is lack of clarity concerning the four methods used and lack of a help file (what is the "Secret Password" for example? How the local spammer database and the application is updated?)
What I do like is the user interface (brilliant!), the ease of installation and saving computer resources.
There is a lot of confusion on various Internet forums concerning SpamItBack. I suggest re-editing your home page in a way your idea is crystal-clear to everybody.... and add a help file to your application (developers love writting help, don't they?).
SpamItBack is a system for FIGHTERS. It is a system for people having guts. Spam field is a war field. A war is a dirty thing and it goes far beyond technology. You can not win it wearing white gloves.
It's good that no money is involved, as dependency on money was the principal reason of the Blue Security's failure.
Okopipi seems a good idea and I sincerely hope that they will take off and succeed. What I miss there is exactly the spirit of fight. The long silence on their side is not very promising.
Let's fight the criminals. Let's win !! |

Hi Fort,
Thanks for your feedback
Didn't realize BlueSecurity relied on that (money) -- we recently just heard about them. Although of course money would help in our case as well -- but yes, this is voluntary. (Any donations, etc help, and speeds up the development process).
However -- you have some really good suggestions.
Would you be willing to write a help file for SpamItBack, and/or what you feel would be a more 'clear' way of saying things? We can of course give you credit, and include your name/info/alias (what you'd like) in the software.
Setting up a help file is fairly easy (can be done in Microsoft Word). (It's basically just typing everything up which we haven't had time for).
Let us know,
Thanks,

Hello,
1. I am willing to write the help. I am a free lance C++ developer having a full time job now, so that it may take some time. I could send you part by part. For that we need a way of communicating more convenient than the discussion forum. You know my e-mail address.
2. There was a general misunderstanding that confused me. For me the f*&%ing Viagra sellers are not spammers. They use spammers to advertise their products and websites. That's the way I understand it (I may be wrong, please enlight me in that case ). SpamItBack aims at the spam advertised websites, right ? That sentence could be added to your home page.
3. Blue Security was a pure commercial venture. It was free for private individuals, but companies had to pay for participation in their "Not Intrude Registry". After a number of spammers attacks, BS went offline, begun to recover and prepare for a noble response. Then the spammers had issued a number of DDOS attacks aimed at the BS paying customers. In order to protect them, BS has decided to cease their anti-spam activities completely. The spammers won.
If BS was not dependent on the customers money (and probably legal contracts as well), they would have been able to continue their mission.
4. I have noticed, that the "Exit" menu option (and the <CTRL>Q) does nothing. Further, the manually added spam websites are lost after quitting the program <-- VERY inconvenient!! |

hi Fort,
Thanks for your reply. Ok, we'll send you a private e-mail re: #1.
Re: #2, actually, in many cases the "viagra" sellers actually "are"
spammers, and just try to give the illusion that other people are
doing the spamming for them. But yes -- SpamItBack allows the
option of going for the spamvertized sites (and there are many ways
to ensure it is a 'spam' site as opposed to a 'legit' site).
Re: #3, thanks for the info.
#4 - Actually that is something we offer for the 'bonus' version (saving
the addresses, to help offset development/hosting/etc costs). But we
are looking at changing the free and bonus version.
Thanks! |

Hi oli32de,
Sure, that sounds great, thanks!
Please go ahead and do whatever translating you would like w/the software and/or website. For the german version of the website, please prefix all pages with gr_, so for example, index.php would become gr_index.php.
Also, we'll include you in a credits page. You can either use your realname and/or and alias, thank-you for your help.
Thanks!

I want to make a small correction.
For German lamguage is more apropriate to prefix all pages with de_ (DE is used in web pages for Germany , for example www.mypage.de)
GR is used for Greek web pages.
